Exhibition: Flag Day/Sale Day
Artist: Carolina Caycedo
COLLECTIVE SALE AND SEWING. BRING YOUR STUFF TO SELL IT AND GIVE US A HAND SEWING THE FLAG.
Date: Sunday August 25, 2002. 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Bethnal Green Road between Wheeler St. and Sclater St. next to the rope sculpture at Bishopsgate tunnel/arches/goodsyard at Brick Lane Market.
The Flag will then be hung at Club Row and Redchurch Street from Aug. 26th to Sep. 26th.
24/7’s second exhibition features the work of Carolina Caycedo. Caycedo’s work questions the mechanisms and strategies of economic exchange. For her exhibition at 24/7, Caycedo will set up a selling point at London’s East End’s Brick Lane Market which every Sunday becomes an autonomous zone for the informal sale of products. Caycedo will sell many of her possessions at prices ranging from £1 to £5; she will also invite friends and visitors to sell their unused possessions next to her. The money raised from the sale of her stuff will be used to pay for the material to sew a flag made from a combination of the British and Colombian flags. The flag will be produced during the event and hung at the wall of 24/7 gallery after the sale.
Carolina Caycedo was born in London in 1978, grew up and studied in Bogota, and currently lives and works in London. For her most recent solo exhibition, DAYTODAY at The Secession in Vienna, Austria Carolina lived in a van for 3 weeks with no money, and lived on a day to day basis from a series of exchanges of services (www.day-today.org). Caycedo has exhibited widely, participating in group shows such as DA ADVERSIDADE VIVEMOS, ARC-Musèe d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France (2001), and PR 00, PARENTESIS EN LA CIUDAD, MM Projects, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2000) among others.
24/7 exhibits the work of young contemporary Latin American artists living in London and abroad whose work questions the conventional clichés and representations of cultural production from Latin America. On this occasion 24/7-Wall Gallery uses the wall of a house located at the corner of Club Row and Redchurch Street in London’s East End as an exhibition platform.
